Youth in their 18th year. Individuals apply to participate by registering to play in a special DiscoverEU lottery. It‘s imperative to answer a few questions, correct answers increase your chances of winning. The draw is otherwise random and is done in Brussels. For individuals who need additional support, there is a special application deadline once a year, the DiscoverEU Inclusion Action (see below).
Participants who are drawn win an Interrail train pass which they can use for a period of 12 months but once activated the pass is valid for 30 days. Participants from Iceland also receive a plane ticket from Iceland to the starting point, and back home, included. The flight ticket must be requested separately from the travel agency responsible for the DiscoverEU passes.
Applications are open twice a year (in spring and autumn). Application deadlines are specified here, on social media and www.eurodesk.is.
Applications for the DiscoverEu Inclusion Action are on October 4th.
Give young people the opportunity to get to know each other better across borders, languages and cultures and thus promote tolerance. Increase the independence of young people and introduce them to the possibilities that Europe has to offer.
The idea is to give more young people the opportunity to get to know each other better across borders, languages, and cultures – with the hopes that this mobility will promote tolerance. DiscoverEU was launched in 2018 and over 100,000 18-year-olds took part in the very first draw. 15,000 of them received 30-day rail passes which they could use almost unlimitedly on European railways. For many, it was the first time they traveled abroad without an adult, and many reported making new friends, improving their language skills, and gaining more confidence.
The pass is valid for 30 days during a 12-month period. Each person decides when the pass is used during the travel period and for how long (limited travel days). Participants cover the costs of accommodation and food themselves, but the pass comes with a discount card that is valid at 40,000 places all over Europe.
Young people who are born in a certain period specified at each application deadline and turn 18 during the period of travel.

Participants are drawn randomly. Participants must be living in Iceland and be of the correct age. Iceland gets 48 tickets (the number is based on the percentage of the population including the total size of the pot). Participants can increase their odds by answering the five questions in the game correctly.
